(CNN) -- The bodies of six Czech hikers who died in an avalanche near the Soelden ski resort in the Austrian Alps were recovered Sunday, police and rescue services said Sunday.

The avalanche occurred at 3,000 metres (9,850 feet), Saturday in the Schalfkogel mountains.

Klaus Middeldorf, one of the medics aboard a rescue helicopter that searched for the victims, said a mountain guide at the scene saw people going up the mountain and later saw the avalanche come down.

Mountain rescuers were unable to get to the scene though because of poor weather.

Rescuers attempted to reach the hikers by helicopter on Sunday morning but they were dead, according to Austrian news agency APA. The bodies were later recovered.
